![]() With Shrove Tuesday just past, here's an image of what that means in Sedgefield, County Durham. It's all about a Ball. Shrove Tuesday is traditionally a day of excess, known to most for pancakes, ideal when rich food ingredients – eggs, milk and sugar – are to be used before the 40 fasting days of Lent. Back as far as the 12th Century though, ball games became popular as a form of mass community celebration for the day. Gradually disappearing over the years, only 4 or 5 games survive; one of these is in Sedgefield. So, if you're feeling brave next year, arrive at 1.00pm when the ball is thrown to the crowds and experience what football can really be like. I'd tend to recommend steel toed boots, shin guards... body armour... Photograph by Stephen Curry. Words by Stephen Curry.
